Then on Sunday, July 8, Broken Yoke will lead worship at Asbury (just in case you’re wondering, they do tone down their sound for Sunday). Invitation to Romans An 8-Week DISCIPLE Study It is difficult to overstate the importance of Romans in Christian tradition. Some of the great formers and re-formers of church teachings were themselves formed by their reading of Romans. As such, this study invites us into conversation around several key themes: (1) Paul’s emphasis on communal salvation; (2) the centrality of God’s righteousness; and (3) the relationship between Jews and Gentiles and the relationship of both to God. This study group gathers Tuesday at 6 pm starting June 12. Invitation to the New Testament An 8-Week DISCIPLE Study Using Matthew’s Gospel as a starting point, this study shows how the New Testament writers and the early Christian community wrestled with the implications of the story of Jesus for their lives and their communities of faith. They invite Christians today to study afresh this story of Jesus to learn more about their calling to discipleship and to community. This study group gathers Wednesday at 6pm starting June 13. Spiritual Classics From nearly two thousand years of Christian writing comes Spiritual Classics. This noon-hour discussion group will read these meditations, reflect together on questions concerning spiritual practices, and engage in exercises to grow in spiritual discipline. This study group gathers Tuesday noon starting June 12. The study group will gather at 2nd Street Emporium. This Holy Mystery: A United Methodist Understanding of Holy Communion This official study of Holy Communion by The United Methodist Church will be the focus of worship and discussion during July and August. The informal discussion following Sunday worship will provide a time for conversation and study as we follow the chapters of the book. This study group gathers Sundays at 11:00 am during July and August. ASP has been providing vital housing services to low-income families living in Central Appalachia since 1969. These youth started their fund raising with a potato bar back in the spring, and they raised enough money to pay for two of the seven people. Their second fund raising venture will be the sale of youth stock. Every Asbury member is encouraged to purchase stock at $10 per share—feel free to purchase more than one share. Every stock purchaser will be invited to an afternoon dessert bar and presentation when the youth return, date to be announced at a later time. The youth truly enjoy these experiences, and past mission trip participants have gone on to college seeking mission work and experiences in addition to careers of service.
